Description

Bigger tanks ask more of their filters, and the bacteria that keep your water healthy need plenty of room to thrive. Seachem Laboratories Matrix is a high porosity biomedia offered here in a generous 4-liter size, built to support efficient biofiltration for the removal of nitrogenous waste. It is a porous inorganic solid about 10 mm in diameter, engineered to give beneficial bacteria far more living space than the plastic balls found in many filters.
Why the 4-liter Matrix is a strong choice for larger systems:
It is a high porosity biomedia that provides efficient biofiltration for the removal of nitrogenous waste, exactly what a heavily stocked tank produces.

Each liter of Matrix provides as much surface, more than about 700 square meters, as 170 liters of plastic balls, according to Seachem, and you get four liters here.

It supplies both external and internal macroporous surface area, while plastic bio-materials provide only external surface area.

Its macropores are ideally sized for the support of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria, the colonies that stabilize your water.

Seachem says this allows Matrix to remove nitrate along with ammonia and nitrite, simultaneously and in the same filter.

That dual action is what sets it apart from other forms of biomedia, as the brand explains.

Each piece is a porous inorganic solid about 10 mm in diameter, made to hold up in your filter.

The 4-liter quantity is well matched to large aquariums, sumps, or multiple filters.

It works inside your current filtration wherever water passes across the media.

It gives a large, stable population of beneficial bacteria the space it needs.

When you are running a bigger setup, this 4-liter portion of Matrix gives your filter the bacterial surface area to keep up with the bioload. Add it to your filter, let the helpful bacteria establish themselves, and lean on the cycle that keeps your fish in comfortable water. All of the surface-area figures and performance points above are Seachem’s own claims, so you can scale up your biofiltration knowing exactly what you are putting to work in your aquarium.
