Description

Plant Profile

Pearl Weed, also known as Pearl Grass, is a versatile, bright green stem plant highly favored for its exceptional adaptability in aquascapes. Depending on your pruning routine, Pearl Weed can serve as a dense foreground carpet, a bushy midground accent, or a lush background group. When grown under bright lighting with frequent trimming, it creeps horizontally along the substrate, offering a low-maintenance alternative to delicate carpeting plants without requiring complex high-tech setups.

Key Features & Benefits

Versatile stem plant that can be trained as a low foreground carpet or grown tall as background cover.

Dense green foliage provides shelter for dwarf shrimp and fish fry.

Care & Planting Instructions

Remove lead weight and remove cotton wrap (or foam) surrounding the base, then strip the lower inch of foliage so bare stems anchor cleanly into soil without rotting.

Group several small stems together and use fine-tip pinsettes to push them 1 to 2 inches into substrate, spacing groups about half an inch apart.

Provide medium-to-high lighting to encourage dense, bushy growth; higher light intensity promotes horizontal creeping and tighter leaf spacing.

Maintain stable water parameters, as Pearl Weed easily extracts necessary nutrients from quality aquarium soil and liquid fertilizers.

Trim stems aggressively with curved or straight scissors to shape into dense hedges or maintain a low foreground carpet. Read our trimming & propagation guide for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why are the lower leaves falling off my stem plants?

Lower leaf loss (leggy stems) usually occurs when lighting cannot reach the bottom of the plant due to overcrowding or shading from larger plants. Spacing individual stem groups slightly apart during initial planting and maintaining adequate light penetration will keep lower leaves healthy.

2. How do I get Pearl Weed to grow as a foreground carpet?

To train Pearl Weed into a low carpet, provide strong lighting and trim the top leaves frequently. Regular trimming forces the plant to send out horizontal runners along the substrate rather than growing upward toward the surface.

3. My stem plants arrived with round green leaves, but the new growth looks totally different. Is this normal?

Yes! Many aquatic stem plants are cultivated emersed (above water) at plant nurseries, producing rounder, thicker green leaves. Once submerged in your aquarium, the plant will transition into its true aquatic form, sprouting delicate, submerged foliage.
